Darts is a game with deep roots, dating back to medieval times when soldiers sharpened their skills by throwing short arrows at the bases of wine barrels or tree trunks. This evolved into the dartboard we know today, with its familiar bullseye and numbered sections. What began as a casual pastime in English pubs has grown into a global sport with professional circuits, big tournaments, and a loyal fanbase.
While darts were popular in pubs for centuries, the game didn’t become a competitive sport until the mid-20th century. The News of the World Darts Championship, first held in 1927, was a major milestone, helping to establish the sport’s credibility. But it wasn’t until television entered the picture in the 1970s that darts exploded in popularity. The British Darts Organisation (BDO), founded in 1973, played a critical role in organizing and promoting these televised events, including the first World Championship in 1978.
Phil “The Power” Taylor is a name that resonates in the world of darts like no other. Taylor’s dominance in the sport is legendary, with 16 World Championships under his belt, making him the most successful player in darts history. His precision and mental toughness set new standards, inspiring countless players around the world.
Before Taylor, there was Eric Bristow, “The Crafty Cockney,” who ruled the 1980s with five World Championships. Bristow’s rivalry with John Lowe was iconic, and their matches were must-see events that helped grow the sport’s popularity.
Michael van Gerwen is one of the modern-day stars who has taken up the mantle. Known for his lightning-fast throws and aggressive style, van Gerwen has won multiple World Championships, cementing his status as one of the best in the game today.
Today, darts is a global sport with professional tours organized by the Professional Darts Corporation (PDC). The PDC World Championship, Premier League, and World Matchplay are among the biggest events, drawing top players from around the globe and captivating millions of fans.
The sport has also spread beyond its traditional strongholds in the UK and the Netherlands. Germany, Australia, and the United States have become hotbeds of darts enthusiasm, with new talent emerging from these regions. This international growth ensures that darts continue to evolve and reach new audiences.
Gerwyn Price, the 2021 PDC World Champion, is known for his fiery style and emotional outbursts, which have made him one of the most talked-about players on the circuit. Peter “Snakebite” Wright, with his colourful mohawk and matching outfits, is another fan favourite who adds flair to every tournament.
But there’s also a new kid on the block who’s been turning heads, Luke Littler. At just 16 years old, Littler is a rising star who’s already making waves in the darts world. Known as “The Nuke,” Littler has shown remarkable talent and composure for his age, earning praise from commentators and fellow players alike. His rapid rise through the ranks has many predicting that he could be a future world champion. Littler’s dedication to the sport and his natural talent make him one to watch as he continues to develop and challenge the established stars.
